There are 1,380 independent
United Way's around the country.
All monies raised here in the
Piedmont stay here in our communities, unless designated by a donor to outside area organizations.
Some of our counties have a
4-5% unemployment rate, and those people cannot pay their rent or utility bills.
13% of 7-12th graders did not
visit a dentist this year.
The aging population
is expected to increase by 45% between now and 2010; and 24% of elders
live alone needing some help.
On any one night, there are 42
homeless people in a local shelter, 3 on the street, 2 sleeping in their car, 2 staying in
a motel, and 10 bunking with a friend; 28% of the local homeless are experiecing
a serious health problem.
17% of Virginia's children live
below the poverty level; higher percentages were reported in Culpeper, Madison and Orange
Counties.
9% of Piedmont youth (9th and 10th
graders) have experienced dating violence and 25% reported sexual harassment.
A family of four cannot pay all their
necessary bills on $17,000 a year, considered to be a "living wage" in some communities.
Minimum wages mean people are not able to survive.
